Port Phillip Arcade Mural

Port Phillip Arcade was designed by architect JFW Ballantyne and completed in 1961. Located at 228-236 Flinders Street, Melbourne it is an exemplary example of architecture from this era. Internally the arcade had major alterations made during the 1990's but the original mid-century mural signage still remains on the facade.

Created by Charles Bush, the facade features a stylised King Neptune/Seahorse holding a trident. This semi-figurative metal sculpture is positioned in front of a tile mosaic featuring a star motif.

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is hopeful that the Charles Bush sculpture will be conserved and incorporated into the new Melbourne Metro Rail Project (MMRP) Flinders Gate Precinct design.

Solar System Trail

Constructed along the City of Port Phillip's foreshore is a bike and walking trail that is a model of our solar system to a scale of one to one billion. Between St Kilda and Port Melbourne you can view the Sun, Proxima Centauri, Mercury, Venus, Earth & Earth's Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

"This project, combining educational, environmental and artistic themes, was based on an initial temporary model located on the foreshore in 2005. The City of Port Phillip, Lonely Planet Foundation, Chris Lansell of Monash University, artist Cameron Robbins, Science works and the Astronomical Society of Victoria, collaborated to bring that vision to reality in 2008" (Text from 'Walks in Port Phillip, Solar System Trail')
